Conservation Ecologist

Matt is a senior ecologist with 25 years’ experience in botany, plant–fungal interactions, and threatened flora and fauna conservation. He has worked extensively with native orchids, eucalypts, Tasmanian vegetation communities, and both the swift and orange bellied parrots.  He holds a PhD in Resource Management, leads multi-stakeholder conservation projects and is skilled in ecological impact assessment, project management and team leadership.

Matt has a particular interest in developing, and implementing - novel and robust monitoring programs for populations for highly mobile, rare or elusive species for which information is usually lacking. Creating population-level monitoring programs for the critically endangered swift parrot, identifying key shifts in breeding distribution and threats from habitat loss and predation. Matt has also conducted extensive research on the orange-bellied parrot, focusing on population trends and recovery actions.

His combination of scientific expertise and strategic planning makes him a respected leader in threatened species conservation.
